Institution Profile
International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) or locally known as Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM) offers a variety of unique opportunities for student on academic excellence, career and individual growth. The university is the manifestation of one of the major Muslim scholars in Malaysia to have an Islamic university in Malaysia to lead the ummah in all branches of knowledge.
The plan to establish IIUM was revealed by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the Fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia on 12 January 1982 after deliberating with the Education Minister, senior government officers and senior academics from local universities. The university was officially established on 20 May 1983 by the government of Malaysia.
The university is committed towards a wholesome and comprehensive approach in offering higher education program. Its philosophy is built upon the belief that pursuing knowledge as an act of ibadah ( i.e. as an act of worship to Allah) which was inspired by the outcome of the 1977 First World Conference on Muslim Education in Makkah. UIAM combines knowledge source from wahyu (revelation by Allah) into its curriculum. This contributes towards an intellectual tradition as well as developing a good moral character.
UIAM uses English as the medium of communication for the courses offered and for daily operations. Meanwhile Arabic is used for Human Science (Arabic Literature) dan Law (Shari’ah). The usage of both language reflects one of the university’s mission which globalization.

Admission Requirements
- Language Requirements
Depending on the programme of study, instruction at IIUM is carried in English and/or Arabic. Applicants wishing to pursue studies in programmes taught in English must obtain:
- A score of 550 in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or
- 6.0 points in the test administrated by the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS)
- If they do not have either of these qualifications, applicants may sit for the IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT), in which they must obtain at least 6.0 points to fulfill the requirement.
- Applicants interested in programmes taught in Arabic must obtain an exemption after sitting for the IIUM-administered Arabic Placement Test (APT).
Applicants who are unable to submit satisfactory results in any of the tests above may take up language proficiency courses at the university to fulfill the admission requirements.
- Other Requirements
If deemed necessary, applicants may also be required to attend an interview and/or take an entrance test conducted by the University. Applicants should note that normally there are more applications than places available at the University. The fulfillment of the minimum entrance requirements alone
